Rockford Orthopedic Research

Rockford Orthopedic has long held a commitment to continuing medical education and providing university-level care, so in 2006 it was a natural next step to formalize a program that allows our physicians to participate in the process that contributes to medical research and makes revolutionary new products and treatments possible.

Clinical research studies are biomedical or health-related studies that involve patients with targeted diagnosis. Depending on the specific study, there are usually 50 - 100 sites nationally or internationally participating in a particular study. Sites are carefully selected based on state-of-the-art diagnostic and facility criteria and by the commitment demonstrated by the physicians involved in top quality patient care.

By participating in national and international studies at the Phase II - V levels, Rockford Orthopedic physicians have access to new treatment options for patients on a local level who have not experienced improvement through other treatments.

Since opening the research center at Rockford Orthopedic, the practice has been involved in a number of clinical research and device studies, including a recently completed Dupuytren's contracture study in which the results proved very positive for participating patients.  Please note: the Dupuytren's study has concluded and enrollment is closed.

The practice is currently involved the following studies:

  • Hip and knee device studies
  • Multiple Rheumatology studies of treatments for rheumatoid arthritis
  • Rheumatology studies of treatments for gouty arthritis
  • OP1 Implant Device study
  • Radial Head Repair study
  • Chronic back pain study
  • Rheumatology studies of treatments for psoriatic arthritis
  • Rheumatology studies of treatments for lupus
  • Rheumatology studies of treatments for fibromyalgia

Upcoming studies:

  • Frozen shoulder
  • Osteoporosis

Rockford Orthopedic's involvement in research studies allows the physicians to stay on the cutting edge of new treatment options. As these new medications are approved by the FDA for mainstream use, Rockford Orthopedic physicians are already familiar with and comfortable using them due to involvement in the studies.

Involvement in these studies offers great benefits to patients as well as expanding the physicians' knowledge. Study participants gain access to new research treatments before they are FDA approved or available and have a more active role in their health care.

Participating in a research study offers financial as well as health benefits, especially for those with high co-pays or do not have healthcare coverage. All laboratory, medication, and physician costs are covered for the patient participant by the company conducting the study.
